Media Learning Seminar

Invitation from Knight Foundation President Alberto Ibargüen

Please join us for an important seminar in Miami this winter!

On March 1 and 2, 2010, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation will sponsor the third Media Learning Seminar for U.S. community and regional foundations on the topic of The Information Needs of Communities in a Democracy. Your encouragement in building on what we've presented and learned in the first two years has guided the programming for this third seminar. This year's program will provide new insights into the changing media landscape and emerging technologies while offering concrete examples of how foundations are helping to fill their community's information voids.

Knight Foundation and many of you believe that information is an essential community need. It is as real a need as education, jobs, housing and a vibrant cultural life. We also believe it is a need that community and regional foundations - as civic leaders who know their communities best -- could and should take steps to meet.

Our five-year, $24 million Knight Community Information Challenge helps foundations fund news and information projects through matching grants. Many of you are already doing projects in your communities. At the Media Learning Seminar, participants can brainstorm ideas for new projects or exchange tips for ongoing ones. Through panels and a series of breakout sessions, the seminar will highlight best practices for Web 2.0, how to employ gaming for community engagement and ways to use information to help broaden your pool of donors, among many other topics.

The seminar will take place from 10 a.m. March 1 through 2 p.m. March 2 at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida. With support from Knight Foundation, there is no registration fee. Foundations can bring one senior staff member and one board member. Registration is on a "first-come, first-served" basis until the seminar is full. Knight's funding also makes possible a reduced hotel room rate of $225 per night for seminar attendees available through the on-line registration. We know these are challenging times so we value your participation and look forward to welcoming you in March.

To participate, please register by Feb. 12, 2010 at: http://events.signup4.com/knightfoundation-mls2010.

We are pleased to provide this learning opportunity and look forward to a lively discussion and the sharing of ideas for action.
